Prime Minister Kosor calls for zero tolerance to corruption

ZAGREB, Nov 25 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said on Wednesday that the government had a zero tolerance policy on corruption and that those involved in any corruption activity should answer for it.

"There should be no mercy for anyone at any level, regardless of their name," Kosor said after a round table discussion held on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, when asked about a scandal regarding the fixing of soccer matches.

Asked if she agreed with Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic and Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) presidential candidate Andrija Hebrang, who said that the President of the Republic should be stripped of some of his privileges after the expiry of his term in office, should he continue to engage in daily politics, Kosor said that the parliament had passed a law defining special rights of the President of the Republic upon the expiry of his/her term.

"As long as such a law exists, the government will respect it," Kosor said, adding that the law would soon be applied for the first time because Croatia would soon have a former living president for the first time.

She added that there was a possibility the law would be modified since in a few years and after several election cycles, Croatia would have several former presidents.

Whether the law will be modified remains to be discussed, she said.

"I have to comply with the existing law and secure funds and provide an office for President Stjepan Mesic once he becomes a former president, so that he can enjoy the conditions envisaged by the law adopted by the parliament," Kosor said.
