Croatia receives backing from EPP leaders

BRUSSELS, Oct 29 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor on Thursday received the backing of leaders from the European People's Party (EPP) to whom she outlined a road-map in the negotiations with Slovenia on the two countries' border dispute, and informed them that she hoped that an arbitration deal would be inked next week.

Kosor was attending an EPP summit in Brussels for the first time in her capacity as prime minister of Croatia and leader of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).

"My colleagues from the EPP were glad to share my optimism," Kosor said after the EPP summit in Brussels.

"I acquainted them with this brief road map, hoping that the agreement will be signed next week," she said.

According to Kosor, she received the backing of the EPP summit, which drew a score of heads of state or government of EU member-states, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Swedish Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, who was replacing Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who got ill, at the summit, welcomed the progress in the Croatian-Slovenian border dispute negotiations, and said that he would like to see Croatia in the EU in 2011.

I am told that things are progressing well and I am very happy about this news. I hope that Croatia and Slovenia will be able to sign a political agreement and that this will pave the way for the smooth continuation of Croatia's EU accession negotiations, Frattini said after the EPP summit.

Kosor expressed satisfaction with the support Croatian President Stjepan Mesic gave to her agreement with Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor.
